This week we are finishing our large data load into production 🎉.
•
Due to our application being hosted in the AWS cloud we are able to spin up multiple EC2 instances very quickly.
•
These servers can be scaled out or up to adjust performance. In our case we are uploading 300k employer records via integration.
•
To prepare the production environment for this large data load we “scaled out” by increasing the min and max number of instances that the integration will be leveraging, this will help the server support the 300k employer load.
•
We have calculated this process to take roughly 16 hrs with the scale out in place.
•
I will be monitoring the performance over the holidays, wish us luck 🙏🏾

📸@yeahgirlscode How do you prioritise which feature to build / which GitHub issue to tackle next ? In this perspective, I take into account both product and business needs. This is best applied to smaller companies but perhaps I'm wrong, and bigger ones too !

- Product : are there any existing liabilities on the user experience, that means any future features will be less appreciated, because of user frustrations which decredibilise your app / web app / platform as a whole ?
Before moving onto the next features, I would advise to notify of any existing product / code debt that you're aware of and try to avoid jumping on the next thing to build as soon as the opportunity comes. Iterating on old or current codebase isn't as exciting as building something fresh from scratch, but it is crucial not to rush this ! Do one thing at a time and do it well.

- Business : you there need to conciliate pragmatism with building the best things ever the user wants. When I say pragmatism : for example, you can have a superb idea which is actually too complex to implement in the short run so it would never see the light in time , or you can have a superb idea which is beyond the team's / company's resources. There needa to be a match between what brings your customer the most value, with what would bring your engineering team a sustainable, executable workflow. Be excited , sure, but also be transparent. Perhaps features that are less exciting to build make more sense for the business & users match.
Don't hesitate to communicate it to people outside of engineering if the above happens . I can certainly see when someone might want to head down and build something even knowing it can't be done right and on time, also because of pressure. It is always in everyone's interest to calculate risk benefits thoroughly and communicate that early on.

But extend this kind of decision to your whole daily planning ! What is it that I can do today that would benefit our users & company the most ? Have a think around product and business , have a chat with the rest of your team, be aware of where things are at at different levels of the company, and code things with purpose.
